What is Manual Medicine?
- The term manual medicine, used interchangeably with manual therapy are specific techniques such as joint manipulation, joint mobilization, passive range of motion, and soft tissue mobilization of muscles, tendons, fascia, and nerves etc.
- Used in treatment of pain, stiffness, chronic conditions, injuries, sprains, strains, and post-surgical care.
- The details of what techniques to apply with how much force to get a desired therapeutic effect is derived from the initial CLINICAL ASSESSMENT of your problem with continuous ongoing ASSESSMENT throughout your treatment using patient feedback is the KEY to the method.
- It based on a very specific method of evaluation that we use often referred to as provocation testing, where we gently provoke or agitate the problem, not to make it worse, but having the intent of revealing what tissue(s) are at the source of the problem. It reveals what techniques are indicated.
- Clinical reasoning, formal PT knowledge of the human body, and the skill set needed is why it is a highly effective and efficient way of providing safe conservative treatment for musculoskeletal problems.
- Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapists have extensive training beyond what is taught in doctoral level physical therapy programs.
